Plate Tectonics Review Questions

What are the layers that make up Earth? List the 3 layers of the Earth starting from surface inward.

Hint #1: The outside of a piece of bread.
Hint #2: Very inside of an apple is called _____.

Answer: Crust, mantle, core

What two layers make up the lithosphere?

Hint #1: Moho is squished in between the two layers.
Hint #1: One starts with a c and the other with a u.

Answer: Crust and upper mantle

Convection currents occur in what part of the mantle?

Hint #1: Convection currents are a result of the hot outer core.
Hint #2: Also known as the asthenosphere.

Answer: Lower mantle

List the two types of crust and the rock that is found in each.

Hint #1: One starts with an O and the other starts with a C.
Hint #2: What rock is used for counter tops? "G"

Answer: Oceanic=basalt, continental = granite

What happens in Earth’s interior to produce Earth’s magnetic field? Describe the layers of the interior where the magnetic field is produced.

Hint #1: The outer core is liquid.
Hint #2: Involves spinning

Answer: Solid inner core spins faster than the Earth and is surrounded by liquid outer core.

What are some of the differences and similarities between the mantle and the core?

Hint #1: Liquid or solid?
Hint #2: What are they made of?

Answer: Mantle is made of melted rock. Inner core is solid and made of metals iron and nickel.

Explain how radiation, conduction, and convection are different.

Hint #1: For radiation, think about the sun.
Hint #2: For conduction think hot stove burner.

Answer: Radiation=transfer through empty space, conduction=direct contact, convection=fluid

Describe how convection currents form.

Hint #1: Involves heating from underneath.
Hint #2: Warm liquids are less dense.

Answer: Rock becomes hot and rises, cools at the surface to become more dense and then sinks.

In general, what happens to the density of a fluid when it becomes hotter?

Hint #1: Does warm air rise or sink?
Hint #2: Miss K's room is hot because hot air rises.

Answer: Density decreases

What happens to the convection currents when a fluid reaches a constant temperature?

Hint #1: If you stop adding heat to a boiling pan of water, what happens?
Hint #2: Constant temperature means that the liquids have the same temperature and density.

Answer: Convection currents stop.

On the test if we fail, how would that effect our grades?
Would we be able to make it up?

what happened to the other 4 quetions on the plate tectonics study guide?

On the test if you fail, you can always come in during Institute to retake the test. Your final grade is the average between your initial score and your retake score.
